TOPOLIA GORGE

Topolia Gorge is about 1,500 meters long. It has a rich flora, with rare and endemic plant species, and is an area of majestic, wild, and natural beauty. The steep slopes of the gorge, with a few cavernous cavities, rise imposingly at a height of hundreds of meters. Of particular interest is the cave of Saint Sophia with the homonymous temple and stalagmites. Fragments of pottery dating from the Neolithic to Roman times have been found in the cave.

MYTH OF THE GORGE: The mythological tradition says that the legendary giant Talos rested in the Topolian Gorge along with the Fairies (Nymphs) as he enjoyed dancing to the songs that they created. Talos was a bronze giant that was given to King Minos by the god of fire (Hephaestus) to protect its shores from foreign invasion. Talos would wander from one end of the island to the other in order not to allow foreigners to step on Cretan Soil.

ELAFONISI

Elafonisi is at the south-eastern tip of Crete and it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the entire island. The crystal-clear waters of this lagoon are surrounded by pink sand that gives this beach its reputation to be a unique and unforgettable experience. Elafonisi is one of the few beaches in the world where pink sand can be found and it’s this that makes it such a popular destination with people from all over the world.

A short walk through the shallow turquoise waters will take you to the island of Elafonisi. And it’s here you will find many species of plants and wildlife that add to the raw nature and unparalleled beauty of this incredible place. To add to its beauty and wonder, this area is also a refuge for the protected Careta Careta Turtles and is now included into NATURAs protection and conservation work.

WINE TOUR AND TASTING

Kissamos in north-west Crete has a long tradition of wine making and it’s here that the Pnevmatikakis Winery is located.

The modern facilities; specific varieties; quality control and their passion for wine are just some of the elements that separate this winery from many others in the area. The Pnevmatikakis Family is engaged in the science, study and preservation of wine making from generation to generation and their passion is shown within each variety of wine that they produce.

Pnevmatikakis winery grows many traditional varieties of grapes such as; Romeiko, Kotsifali, Mantilari and Liatiko (for red wines) and Vilana, Vidiano and Moschato of Spina (for white wines). This winery also grows international grape varieties such as Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot (for red) and Chardonnay (for white). Their attention to detail is second to none and this is reflected in the names and drawings of the labels which are inspired by Crete’s long standing tradition with cultivating the land and protecting it for the future.

On the upper floor of the Winery is the Wine Museum and it’s here that you can learn about the daily life of the older generations on the island of Crete as well as the science and knowledge behind wine making and the production of local raki (tsikoudia).

Take a few steps out onto the panoramic veranda and it’s here your wine tasting experience will begin.
