EAST COAST

Agios Nikolaos is a coastal town located in the east of Crete. In the heart of the town, you will see a formerly sweetwater lake, connected to the sea with a tunnel that was dug in 1870. A panoramic view of the lake can be seen from a small park situated above it. In the town, you can visit local restaurants and shops to try local cuisine and pick up some souvenirs.

After Agios Nikolaos, we will arrive at the “deep blue” Elounda, a popular seaside destination where you will have the chance to relax and enjoy the sun and the sea! Opposite Elounda, you will see Spinalonga island, which was originally a part of the bay but subsequently was used as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. It is notorious being one of the last active leper colonies in Europe. The last inhabitant, a priest, left the island in 1962. In Spinalonga you will be able to take incredible photos and grasp the complexity of the island’s history.

  • AGIOS NIKOLAOS
  • Agios Nikolaos has an enviable location on the hilly terrain overlooking the shores of the curving Mirabello Bay. It may feel less Cretan than other towns, partly because of its resort-style flair, tree-lined avenues, and most modern architecture. However, there’s also a strong local character to Agios Nikolaos that gives it with charismatic, low-key flair.

  • ELOUNDA
  • Elounda Village was once a picturesque fishing village in the lovely Mirabello Bay and nowadays is an ideal destination for people who want a seaside holiday in a place which is neither too busy nor too isolated. Explore this spectacular coastline, its’ shaded beaches, crystal clear seas and archaeological sites at your own leisure with our beautiful Tour of the East Coast.

  • SPINALONGA
  • Opposite Elounda you will see Spinalonga island, it has been a huge part of Crete’s History over the last few centuries but is most famously known for its use as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. The Spinalonga Fortress is the second most visited archaeological site in Crete after the palace of Knossos, and the sixth in the whole of Greece. It is notorious for being one of the last active leper colonies in Europe and it is said that the last inhabitant of the island left in 1962. He was a priest. On Spinalonga you will be able to take incredible photos and grasp the complexity of the island’s history while taking in the beautiful sites of the Aegean Sea and stepping into the lives of those who lived there.

    TIP:
Get the boat across from Plaka to Spinalonga, since you are reading the island you will definitely want to visit Plaka. Don’t forget if you go take the boat across to Spinalonga from Plaka ( 8€ return) then do take your swimming stuff as there is a little pebble beach in Plaka where you can have a swim after walking around the island which can be very hot!! so do take hats and water too.
